Small Playhouses
Is it okay to audition for a local playhouse when I’ve never acted or took lessons?
I’m 19 years old and I’ve always wanted to act…I know that is a cliche but I just mean act in local plays, I wouldn’t mind just having a small role. Would it be okay to audition for a play at my local playhouse when I’ve never acted or took lessons? Would they want to see people who have had experience at some point?
Hi! Acting is so much fun. I acted throughout high school and college. I definitely think that you should try out at your local playhouse. They are looking for people who have a genuine desire to act and who will show a high level of commitment.
While they do like people who have some kind of experience, the only way to get experience is to start out somewhere. I think that you could begin in a tiny background role and see if you like it. Then you can continue auditioning and eventually you will have enough experience to move up.
Just make sure that you write on your audition form that you will take even very small roles. Even if you don’t get accepted into the play, try to get on the stage crew… that is also a good starting point.
