Waterproof floor for a plastic playhouse?

Hi,

I’ve just bought and put together a playhouse for my boys. It doesn’t come with a floor. Any ideas what i can put down that will be hopefully waterproof? Also, any ideas what i can use to cover it in the winter?

Thanks for any help

Plastic Playhouses For Kids

Plastic Playhouses For Kids

Did anyone ever have a plastic smurf house playhouse?

When I was little (1980′s) we had a kid-sized smurf mushroom house kinda like a little tykes playhouse. It had a door and a chimney. It was off-white with a red mushroom top. Did anyone else have one or has anyone seen one recently? I would like one for my daughter. We gave mine away to a family with foster kids years ago and I wish I could find another one…
( thanks for those who answered but I am not talking about a little one…this was about 5 feet wide and 5 feet tall. You could walk inside it and play like you were a smurf. It was the coolest thing ever!)

Wow…that evoked a ton of memories, I had totally forgotten, but yes I had one. I still have a ton of smurfs, but not the house. They sell the house on Amazon for about 40.00, also, you can get smurphette’s cottage. If you buy them together it’s $55. Good luck in your search

Play Fort

Play Fort

if i a 170lbs female an my 40lbs kid get in a play fort with a wight limit of 200lbs will the 10lbs break it?

Usually those specifications are written on the safe side, so there is frequently a little more tolerance than claimed. This is for new products. But if it’s older, the fort may have degraded, being exposed to the sun, the weather, and use. So in such a case I wouldn’t recommend trying it out. If you can’t figure out how old or heavily used it is, err on the side of safety and stay out.

Kids Wooden Playhouses

Kids Wooden Playhouses

Do I have to worry about liability when building a playhouse for kids?

Im a boyscout working on his eagle project and i was thinking about rebuilding an old wooden playhouse that children at a development center can’t use anymore. Do i need a professional to oversee my work or anything like that? or can i simply rebuild what’s already there? I live in Northern VA and wanted to rebuild two wooden playhouses at ACCA, which i am unsure to whether or not is private property.

You need to talk to the development center about what you want to do, the center needs to get a building permit, and the structure will have to be inspected by the city to assure safety. The organization’s own insurance will cover its use by children if your building passes inspection.

Don’t let the idea of paperwork or an inspection discourage you — you will learn a great deal by going through that experience. You may even want to blog about the experience, so others can learn from your experience in case they want to do something similar.

Cedar Playhouse

Cedar Playhouse

what is the website that has showings of every musical being performed in the US from high school to broadway?

For example, if you search for “bye bye birdie”, it will list something like:

AUG 6-12 Omaha Center of the arts Omaha, NE
SEP 13-17 Cedar Crest High School Lebanon, PA
SEP 28-30 Branson Playhouse Branson, MO

etc…
This website does indeed exist, I had it in my favorites before my computer had to be restarted. It is similar to Theatermania.com, but is not limited to the areas listed on theatermania.
very similar to stagenet.com, thanks for that suggestion. And i should say that it obviously doesnt list EVERY show being performed, but every show registed with this site. Thanks again!

I don’t think there is one website. The only place that info would be available would be from the publisher or whomever owns the rights to the musical. As each time a show is preformed you need to be certain to have rights to preform the show or you could be fined.

Playhouses Build

Playhouses Build

DIY playhouse

The last time I did a quick look for playhouse kits, I was shocked to find out how much I could pay for an item like this, not to mention the added shipping costs for all the lumber. It didn’t take me long to figure out that the money spent on delivery charges alone would pay for much of the lumber if I build the playhouse myself. Now the challenge is finding playhouse plans that I’m capable of building.

This is where it gets a little tricky. If you’ve looked around, you’ve seen some pretty elaborate playhouse designs for sale. Most of these plans seem to be made by experienced carpenters, who approach the project as simply a scaled-down version of the real houses they are familiar building. Nothing wrong with having a playhouse built with this kind of strength and integrity, but whether the average DIY builder can take on a project like this is another story. If you know how to build a house, or know someone who does, these kinds of playhouse plans will work fine. If not, take some care to find a project design that is in your range of skills.

The good news is that playhouses do not really need the same structural details that you’ll find in a real house. Here are a few places in the basic design where you can cut a few corners, and still have a perfectly fine Play houses for the kids.

Floor – Some of the more elaborate playhouse plans call for 2×6 lumber in all floor joist members. This is fine for houses and outdoor sheds, but a small playhouse can work fine using less expensive 2x4s. Go ahead keep with the typical spacing of floor joists (16″ on center) and I’d also stay with laying ¾” plywood on top.

Walls – Some plans get a little carried away with the construction of walls, following the same techniques used in building a real house. That means lots of intricate cripple studs, window headers, and door frames. Most of these features can be simplified. For example, it’s not really necessary to keep wall studs 16″ on center. A plywood wall needs only a few boards to hold it up, one at each side and one or two the middle. And a simple window can easily be cut from the center of the plywood, and framed out with wood trim.

Roof – It’s always a good idea to keep a playhouse water tight, and so the roof is where you should pay the most attention. Most plans call for typical roof construction, and that means plywood sheathing, tar paper, and asphalt shingles. With such a small roof to work with, this is money well spent, regardless of how simple of a design you settle on. The way to save time and money here is to skip the typical gable-roof style and build a simple one-piece roof with a slope. This will do a fine job of keeping rain and snow diverted and save you the trouble of cutting lots of rafter angles.

Outdoor Wooden Playhouse

Outdoor Wooden Playhouse

Wooden Playhouse or a Plastic Playhouse?

Children often don’t enjoy plastic playhouses as much as they seem more comparable to a ‘toy’ than a real little house of their own.
Plastic playhouses generally come prepackaged as several large pieces that need slotting together, a light plastic playhouse can never be as sturdy as a solid as a wooden one and wont make the delightful garden feature and the same impact in your garden that a wooden wendy house would. A wooden playhouse is hand made by craftsmen and a very special attractive item in it’s own right.

Wooden playhouses tend to cost around ten percent more than plastic playhouses, however they do tend to be a much larger to make up for the additional cost, giving equal or even better value for your money. Wooden playhouses are practical and more durable than plastic ones, as plastic playhouses fade and deteriorate over time, whilst wooden ones may be treated with wood stain, meaning that they last for years and years.

Let’s be honest here, wooden playhouses are fine-looking, as they look more traditional, and when painted beautifully, can look more like a home in the garden.

Playhouse Sizes

Have you consider the size of the playhouse you would like? Obviously the usable space in your garden is a significant factor when deciding on the size of your playhouse, as is the number of children you are catering for.

Types of Playhouse

The first type is a traditional wooden playhouse which sits on the ground. These are either single storey playhouses or double storey playhouses, which generally have an internal ladder or stairs to access the top floor. The second type is the tower playhouse, and are supported by wooden legs. Tower playhouses usually have a ladder.

Need a Base for a Wooden Playhouse?

You do need some variety of solid base for a children’s playhouse. Whilst most children’s playhouses come with an internal floor, you’ll still need to provide a level base for it, otherwise the walls of the playhouse might not align correctly.

The easiest solid base to furnish is concrete paving slabs, as six or eight large slabs can be enough to provide a big enough playhouse base, are relatively cheap, and quite straightforward to position.

Children’s Playhouse Safety

Obviously you need to consider safety aspects when choosing a children’s playhouse. Any outdoor toy sold in the UK, in addition to as the rest of Europe, should conform to the relevant safety standard.

There are several safety aspects you should insist on when buying a children’s playhouse:
The Stringent European Standards for Outdoor Playground Equipment EN1176-EN1177 certificate
Plastic/styrene windows, as glass can be dangerous
The wood should be planed so it’s smooth to touch to prevent splintering

Other options may include:

Slate roof
Underfloor Heating
Made to measure curtains and blinds!

Children’s Playhouse Prices

There’s a very wide variety of styles, sizes and price range when it comes to buying playhouses. Make certain to choose a reputable company to purchase from as your child’s safety is priceless.

Wooden Playhouses- From Childrens Playhouse Company

has anyone ever built a child outdoor play house from scratch?

I was looking at the playhouses and all i could find were plastic one and the wooden ones are about $1,000 which i do not have to spend on an outside toy. So anyways my question is if i go to lowes and get lumber and what not would it be super hard to build? And around how much would it cost to do myself?
Thanks :)
i think i should explain a little further i am a 21 year old women who knows little about building anything haha
i do not want it to big probably about 5 ft high and 4 ft wide
i am excited about building it tho since i can make it colors and everything she likes :)
oo sorry, yes my husband will be helping too while my mom is watching my daughter. But trust me, my husband is no builder.
tami, thank you for the websites!! the hgtv one is awesome!! i think i will you that one for my “go to directions” :) thanks again!!

Well, it’s not super hard to do, but it would be kind of difficult for one person, especially a woman (not to sound sexist, just a generalization). Can you get a friend or someone to help? I would estimate the cost to be somewhere between $500 & $700, but there are a lot of variables. And you may want to purchase some tools that will make the job easier (if you don’t already have them) like a nail gun and air compressor (of course, you could borrow or rent them rather then purchase).

The boards to support the floor should be pressure treated and it will last longer if you put it up on blocks.

Here are a couple of sites that should help:

You can find more if you search for ‘how to build a playhouse’ or ‘cost to build a playhouse.’

How to Convert Wooden Sheds from Storage Space to Living Space

If you have an old wooden shed out back that is just holding a bunch of junk, why not get better use out of it converting it into living space. There are a lot of different uses you can convert it into, like an artist studio or a playhouse for the kids. How about a workshop or a mini retreat? Wooden sheds are as versatile as they are practical.

You should start with a cleaned out shed. When you have all the items out of the shed, carefully check for signs of termites or rot – this is a wooden shed after all.

Wooden sheds have exposed studs on the inside and you can use this to your advantage. If you don’t see any signs of insects or rot, brush on a light stain or water sealant to really make your wood more beautiful. A light stain on the wood will give the space a comfortable feel.

Painting the inside walls is another option. Since the space is not very big, keep with lighter shades of colors. And, don’t forget to use a primer first. You will get much better results and use less paint.

Use the same steps as described above if your shed has a wooden floor. If you are fortunate enough to have a concrete foundation, you can leave it as is or you can stain it. Staining is a great solution for revitalizing old worn concrete surfaces. It is best for a professional to stain concrete if the area is large but you should be able to handle it for a wooden shed.

Its just as important to clean up and paint the outside of your wooden shed as well. Keep water from coming in by caulking around any spaces or cracks. This may be fine for storage purposes but since this will be a livable space, you don’t want any moisture to come inside.

Now that you have completed the shell, the fun part really begins. Add your own personal touches to the space depending on what you intend to use it for. A great starting point is to add the more permanent items like shelves and pegboards.
