Building my own wooden swing set…ideas?

I have looked at wooden outdoor play sets and find them quite flimsy looking for the price. My handy-man hubby can build one I am sure but we need some ideas from those who may have done this before. Space is huge where we want to build this, want it to be for good sized kids as well as small. We want to completely avoid any kits as they are not what we are going to do….thanks for the help!

We did not build ours, buts friends did. You can get really creative this way. My friend used real poles, like the kind you’d see at an “old-time” school yard. In doing this, they made the swings nice and high ( I mean the pole was high which means the swings can swing a larger arc and higher) They also used pole for the ladder, a steel floor deck for the “fort” area , found a cool steering wheel for the decktop etc. They designed it themselves, so just remember to think outside the box as far as materials/designs. what paint do i use on exterior wood (but not gloss)?

I’ve built a wooden playhouse in the garden for my children and now they want it painting… I don’t want to gloss it, the shine would be sickening, so what paint do i use? b.t.w. its got to be yellow…

First you will need to prime the wood with an exterior primer, or use a combination paint which primes and paints at the same time. This will protect it from the elements. I believe Home Depot has been advertising a combination primer/paint on TV lately, but I’m not sure whether they have an exterior variety. In any case, do a little online research for the best paints available for this purpose before purchasing anything. Just google “exterior primers and paints”. Then call around to determine the places which carry the paints in which you are interested. My advice is to buy the best paint you can afford, so that you don’t have to repaint very often.

By the way, yellow is a good choice for the color, because it will reflect rather than absorb more sunlight, thereby making the playhouse cooler in the summer. Also, yellow will not appear to fade as rapidly as darker colors.
