Defending Sarawak against piracy – Fort Margherita

Overlooking a breathtaking view of the Sarawak River is Fort Margherita that was built in 1879. The fort was built to safeguard the Kuching capital from the invasion of pirates. It was Rajah Charles Brooke who built this fort and named it after his wife Ranne Margaret. The design of the building is based on an English Renaissance era of castles.

The fort has a 3 storied tower that was used to keep watch for any invaders maneuvering down the river. Two of the rooms lower down in the tower was used as control rooms. A courtyard is surrounded by a high wall which is inlaid with glass shards to protect it from intruders scaling the walls. Inbuilt in to the high walls are wooden windows from which cannons were fired. Up until the Japanese occupation executions were carried out in the courtyard of convicted felons.

Today Fort Margherita houses a Police Museum that was first opened to the public in 1971 with artifacts and rare pieces of weaponry, cloths, cooking utensils and furniture from Rajah Charles Brooke occupation to weapons taken during the communist insurgency. In the Police Museum are also the famous “laughing skulls” that many claim to say emits an eerie sound of laughter.

Kuching is one of the lesser traveled tourist destinations in Malaysia, which gives the city a relaxed and easy going feel. Feel at home in a Kuching serviced apartment when you are looking for that perfect holiday accommodation or business trip. Somerset Gateway is a Kuching serviced accommodation that blends modern amenities without losing the old world charm of the city.

Wooden Swing Sets: The Best Adventure Haven For Kids

Swing sets are like mini playgrounds that include other play items as well. Kids love to play with it all the time. Children seem to appreciate wooden swing sets as the best adventure haven that provides fun and unlimited possibilities.

A swing set comes in a variety of play items. It includes toys of different shapes and sizes of rope ladder, swings, canvass or rubberized seat and slides. A wooden swing set is mostly made up of woods like timber species and pre-cut lumbers as well as pre-assembled ones. It forms an A type frame wood to support weights.

A wooden swing set is the best set for a number of possible reasons. First of all, it simply looks great. It is more than just a kiddie play set. They are very attractive and can match your landscape design. It creates a rustic ambiance to your garden.

It can stand during any weather condition. You can use a wooden swing set during the rainy season, winter and even during extensive sunlight exposure on summer days. Contractors can treat wooden swings like sidings, decks and shingles. Steel and aluminum sets tend to rust for years as well as plastic composites may become brittle and break when overly exposed to sunlight.

It prevents accident. During rainy or winter months, plastic sets are slippery to use. Children are prone to slide off and fall when using a plastic swing set.

No metal pieces that can harm your child. Wooden swing sets have no small pieces of metal that can danger your child’s health.

You can choose from the variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Swing sets made of wood offers many options to choose from. You can choose from a simple standard swing size to a Noah’s Ark shape and big forts.

You can attach additional playground equipment. Most wooden swing sets are complete with a fort, tent coverings, slides, climbing walls or ladders and even sandboxes. There are lots of play equipment options to attach or change as your child grows. You could also put add-ons or accessories.

The fort is the main feature of every wooden swing set. It is a high platform with or without a roof. Forts with a roof serve as a mini playhouse for kids.

Put slides also. Modern slides can turn, bounce, twist, race and drop. It comes in an open, covered and tube range. Kids never tire with it.

Climbing walls are also a great idea. Rock climbing walls are in for kids nowadays. Simulation rocks are used to attach the walls for climbing.

A playground is not complete without sandboxes. It became a standard addition to wood swing sets since its construction is easy to attach. You can keep toys and play materials in it for your toddlers.

Use outstanding materials. Woods are very durable, especially quality cedar or redwood. The latter looks very stylish and durable also, making it the best wood material for a swing. It is highly in demand in the market nowadays. It makes the yard look great too.

There are also manufacturers that use No. 1 Grade yellow pine wood. It has been kiln-dried and treated to be able to produce a lightweight wood with superior durability and resistance.

The canvass top features a durable rubberized material with brass eyelet to secure straps. The swings have rubberized coated chains for easy grip of little hands.

The jungle gym model is becoming popular now among kids. It is a combination of swings and climbing units. It provides fun and safety for your little ones. It also corresponds to the product guidelines for safe toy handling. It also has a variety of modules and accessories to choose from.

The best swing set comes in an all in one package. It should be a perfect play haven for every child who wants to have fun while exercising their imagination and endurance. It really depends on ones personal preferences regarding a child’s needs.

Anyone every bought one of those big wooden playhouse/swingset/slides for your kids?

I was wondering if they were worth the money and if your kids actually liked it. Are they hard to put together? Thanks !!!

We have one. It took three adults about 6 hours to put it together (although all three of us love this kind of stuff) and the kids play with it all the time. The youngest is 2 and the oldest is now 10 and they can all still find something to play with. Not to mention daddy who is very muscular and heavy. The thing is solid as anything. A very good investment!

Garden Sheds the Most Popular Garden Building

Garden sheds are the most popular garden building and they aren’t just a place to store the lawnmower and tools. These days there is a growing trend in alternative uses for the garden shed, such as: playhouses, home offices and workshops. They come in a variety of sizes, prices, and construction material, and are available from online and offline stores.

The different styles and types of garden sheds are based on the roof structures: the most common is the Gable which forms a triangular roof. The Salt Box has a short front gable roof and a gently sloping rear roof. The Hip roof or Cottage Style roof has four sides all angled or sloped, and the Gambrel roof looks similar to a barn.

Garden sheds mainly come in three different types of material. The most common material is wood and they are generally the cheapest to buy. However, wooden garden sheds do need some regular maintenance to keep them weatherproofed. Metal garden sheds tend to be used when long-term strength is needed, as they are sturdy, tough and durable. Again they need to be maintained to protect them from rust. Many garden sheds are also available in a variety of plastic materials and are made from heavy moulded plastics, such as: PVC and polyethylene, and need very little maintenance. There are many different brands and makes, but remember not all sheds are created equal.

Once you’ve decided what material you want for your garden shed, you need to choose the size and style you want. Garden sheds can be made into a centre-piece for the garden, and for the discerning homeowner, some garden sheds come with finials, eaves and verandas. If money is a bit tight but you want the shed to be a centre-piece, choose a shed where extras can be added at a later date, such as: louvre windows, skylight roof sheets and double doors. Garden sheds can also be subdued so they blend in with the architecture of your home and landscape.

Most garden sheds are bought as a flat-pack and can be put together in such a way you do not need to be a professional carpenter to assemble them, although limited carpentry skills are recommended. If putting your shed together is something you don’t want to do, for whatever reason, an option is to have your shed erected by professionals, so you do not have to struggle with the heavy and bulky sections that come with the shed.

If you can not find the garden shed of your dreams, you could always design one yourself or buy designs from you local timber yard, bookstore, or the internet, and build it yourself. Basically there are fours steps to building your garden shed: foundation and floor; frame; siding; roof. The foundation/floor is the solid base for your garden shed and can consist of treated skid timbers, patio stones, concrete base, or pressure treated joist with a plywood floor. The frame is the skeleton of the structure and supports the walls and roof. The siding can be optional and is the covering of a finished wall made from plywood, pine, cedar, or vinyl. The roof is the cover and can be made from asphalt shingles, cedar shingles, aluminium, or metal, etc. At the end of your project you will have had the satisfaction of having built your own shed and saving money at the same time.

Once you have a garden shed, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. They are no longer the domain of spiders and cobwebs, and the uses of garden sheds are limited only by your imagination.

Great Christmas Presents for Toddlers

If you’re looking for a gift for your niece or nephew or your friend’s toddler, here are a few suggestions of gifts to choose that are safe choices, and sure to make both the parents and the child happy. These gifts are good for both girls and boys so you can play it safe when you give one of these gifts.

Legos

These popular building block toys are still very popular among children of all ages. Not only are they great fun for kids but they help build creative skills and keep toddles’ brains active and sharp. There are different sizes of Legos that you can buy so make sure you don’t get the very small Legos if the gift is for a child that is small enough to possibly choke or put them in their mouth. A safe example is to make sure the Legos are larger than custom poker chips. The larger Lego blocks are just at great and can keep a child occupied for hours. The only problem is that sometimes they can be a problem to clean up. You will soon find Legos in the oddest places of your house, trust me.

Playhouse

There are lots of great, affordable playhouse sets available at all toy stores that won’t take up too much space but offer tons of variety and hours of fun for a toddler or small child. Today playhouses come in all different styles and themes, from kitchen playhouses, to treehouse playhouses, you name it, they’ve got one out there so you are sure to find the perfect themed playhouse for any child.

Stuffed animals

Stuffed animals are a great “toy” that a kid can cherish and keep for years and never get sick of it. A stuffed animal will always remind the family of your gift whenever they see it which is a great feeling. Find out what the child’s favorite animal is and search around at the toy stores for the perfect stuffed animal of that type. A safe choice is always a koala bear or a fish or something else nice but kind of unique.

Large Wooden Playhouses

Outdoor play area: – koochieplay.com is the best playground equipment manufacturer

Children love outdoor play, lots of running around using up all that surplus energy.

Often this can be a completely free activity, in the garden or in a playground. But there are also some great outdoor centres – wildlife centres, day trips, theme parks and local attractions. It’s amazing how much more relaxed everyone seems to be out in the open air rather than cooped up inside (especially after a prolonged period of bad weather). Creative Play offers a comprehensive range of children’s outdoor play equipment for all ages. Our school playground equipment includes fitness trim trails, playground safety surfacing, wooden climbing frames, outdoor classrooms and shelters, playhouses, play towers and sandboxes.

It is unfortunate that children can’t design their outdoor play environments. Research on children’s preferences shows that if children had the design skills to do so, their creations would be completely different from the areas called playgrounds that most adults design for them. Outdoor spaces designed by children would not only be fully naturalized with plants, trees, flowers, water, dirt, sand, mud, animals and insects, but also would be rich with a wide variety of play opportunities of every imaginable type. If children could design their outdoor play spaces, they would be rich developmentally appropriate learning environments where children would want to stay all day.

Building an outdoor play area requires time, planning and a drive to complete the project within a financial and time budget. Using swings, water slides, pools and other outdoor accessories that are already built will take some of the burden off the project. With proper planning, you can build a backyard oasis for your family and friends

What Should the Outdoor Play Area Look Like?

  1. The outdoor play area should be large enough for preschool children to run and jump.
  2. Play equipment should be properly anchored.
  3. Outdoor toys should be in good condition and properly maintained.
  4. There should be a variety of climbing structures, balls, riding toys, and lightweight toys for preschool children to push and pull.
  5. The playground should be clean and free from trash and debris.

The out door play area will be more attractive if you will use Koochieplay’s distinctive, beautifully made outdoor play equipments which is enjoyed by children up and down the country in school playgrounds, nurseries, parks and holiday attractions. Children’s outdoor play equipment from Koochieplay. Koochieplay offer a comprehensive range of children’s outdoor play equipment and garden play equipment for all ages. KOOCHIE PLAY SYSTEMS is amongst the fastest emerging playground equipment manufacturer that provides quality outdoor playground equipment. The dream [after all everything begins with a dream we have, is not about making or selling playground systems like no one else does, nor was it to offer a product what everyone wanted, but to become a playground equipment supplier that offers TOTAL SOLUTIONS which would first of all include CHILD SAFETY [an aspect that has been completely ignored till date in the Indian market],MEETING INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS in terms Of quality, aesthetics, product life, design, planning & execution.KOOCHIE has right from the beginning, redefined the rules of the game and achieved a successful balance between SAFETY, RELIABILITY, QUALITY, ASTHETICS, DESIGN and EXCELLENCE Our commercial play equipment includes school playground equipment, wooden climbing frames, shelters, Pavilions, tables, safety surfacing, playhouses, sandboxes and trim trails.

Converting playhouse to rabbit home?

Hi what do think of converting a kids playhouse into a raabit home, for an indoor/outdoor rabbit weather proof, no bars just windows – could mesh over keep flys etc out. Easy to clean, large for more than one rabbit and about the same price of a good wooden hutch?

Thats a brilliant idea – our family were thinking of doing that for our two french lop rabbits (massive!). I saw your question on the metal hutch as well, and answered it discouraging the idea. You must be really into rabbits to do so much research – some people just buy the cheapest hutch they can find from the local pet store. We actually had ours specially made.
Good luck with your bunny!

Easy Tips For Choosing Wooden Swing Sets

One of the first things to take into consider is the age range of your children. Do you have toddlers and older children who will use the set? It is important to note that swing set accessories do have manufacturers recommended age of children who they are designed for.

One example is, a child under the age of one should not use a belt swing and should be placed in a full bucket swing. An older child may like the challenge of the rock wall while toddlers will love the glider swings. Since there are lots play activities built into the playset, you should make sure they are age appropriate for the Kids that will be playing on it.

Each accessories has a maximum weight limit, for example a belt swing may hold 120 pounds while a glider swing for two may hold a combined weight of 150 pounds or 75 lbs. per single rider. Weight restrictions vary style and by manufacturer. Do not make the mistake in thinking they are all the same.

One recommendation is to make a list of the accessories you want and next to name write down the weight limit. For safety reasons, you want to select a unit that best suits the age of the child and there interests. Take the time and research brands, styles and options as the chooses are extensive. Create a list of pros and cons for the residential swing sets you are looking at. Included on your list should be accessories and play options you like. With so styles available in the stores today, this may help you narrow you selection down to a few models.

Before you purchase, you will need to decide on installation. Will you hire a contractor and what is the cost? If you are not a handy individual and can follow directions the installation should be easy. Decide in advance if you will hire a contractor to complete the installation as this cost should be part of your budget. If you do not follow the directions outlined in the owner’s manual the installation process will be stressful.

Which ever model you decide on make sure it has a manufacturers warranty and be sure to complete the warranty card (application) and mail it in. Several companies have the option of submitting online. Should you require customer support from the manufacturer there phone number should be listed on the front cover of your directions, if not write it down.

After your playset has been installed, make sure you keep the owners manual. This book contains useful information that you will need in the future. For example, if the canopy over the fort needs to replaced, you will have the dimensions easily available for ordering a new canopy. Another example, if you disassemble the play system because you are moving and taking it with you, this will make the installation easier. Yes, if you move, take it with you. Once the children are older and have outgrow the swing set, try to sell it.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor Play

Outdoor Play Equipment For Outdoor Fun

We all learn through play and that great adventure begins in a healthy and active childhood. It is not as common these days for children to be off gallivanting through woodland thickets, paddling in babbling brooks or playing pooh sticks off bridges. As idyllic as the image is, unsupervised wanderings are a thing of the past with growing urbanisation and increased traffic on the roads. Instead, garden and school play equipment is the playground of adventurous and energetic little tykes.

The benefits of having outdoor play equipment are in the health statistics of the children. We have all heard the warnings of children becoming couch potatoes, being glued to the computer or games console. The warnings abound of an increase in childhood obesity and diabetes are in the newspapers daily and are ringing loud bells for health conscious parents. The solution starts at home with adventure equipment to scramble over, under, through and round; and can be carried on at school or playgroup with larger versions of the multi faceted climbing frames available.

Long gone are the cold and painted tubular steel frames over concrete. Play equipment available now is made from warming wood that has a chance of blending in with the surroundings. The variety of activities is amazing too. Scramble nets, slides, tubes and tunnels complement swings and rope bridges. Hidey holes and huts sit like penthouse tree houses above the sandpits and paddling pools. Yes, life for the little ones is definitely looking up.

I remember in my youthful days that playgrounds were few and far between and many of them ended up on an Esther Rantzen programme after some poor child had broken an arm, stuck under a roundabout. Another common cause of childhood breakages was cracked heads from children falling from climbing frames onto concrete. Safety issues such as these have been well and truly addressed and there isn’t even the chance of a trapped finger on today’s frames of fun. Public playgrounds are a costly affair, and one many parishes cannot foot the bill for.

Providing for a local community is a governmental priority and many councils run schemes that help with funding toward community playground projects. Often, in urban regeneration areas, grants are available for adventure playgrounds. Lottery grants are also available to fund projects. For schools, playgroups, hospitals and the like, there is plenty of information out there on fundraising. Information packs for PTA committees are available from suppliers of outdoor adventure equipment.

Learning through Landscapes offers support with research and implementing the promotion of playtime. They provide training and have developed programmes that aide the early years age group. The Playground Partnerships Award is run by the chain store Woolworths. The charity aims to help primary schools give existing play areas a face lift, or to start projects from scratch. Awards for all is part of the lottery heritage fund and are available for projects that promote healthy community living, the environment and education. If you are an employee of the Royal Bank of Scotland than you are able to nominate a school for to receive funding for improvements. There are many other schemes available, and a quick search online will help locate charities or organisations that can help.

On a smaller scale, investing in a hardwearing and safe play area at home is economic sense. A family home that is going to see many children raised there will benefit greatly from a sturdy timber framed kid’s kingdom. Sibling rivalry will become sibling reverie and will last for generations of fun.

Playset Designs – Different Styles Employed by Various Countries

Every child yearns for a playset that is installed in their own home’s backyard. In fact, once you install one in your place, you will certainly see how happy your children will be for the purchase. You are lucky enough that you also have overwhelming choices for these playground items.

A playset is popular not only in the United States. It is recognized all over the world thus giving joy to all children of different races. While this is the case, most playset designs vary depending on the country where it is used. Added to that design is the cost that goes with it. Most manufacturers assess the capacity of people to pay for these playground pieces. Take a look into different country variations for a playset.

China’s designs for a playset

China is one Asian country that saw through the manufacture of different designs of a playset. Basically, the country offers an A-framed playset made from metal, wood or even plastic. A small playset made of plastic may also be purchased for indoor use. Furthermore, they tried to conceptualize a more complex playset with plastic slides and wooden ladders. But these do not have roof provisions.

Expect that when you buy a playset made in China, you will have the ease and comfort of assembling and disassembling the pieces. This somehow questions the safety of the materials used in the manufacture of the playset. The costs of these playsets are cheaper though when compared to others.

Britain’s designs for a playset

You will be able to distinguish a playset that comes from Britain from those that come from China. The materials are sturdier even if some are made of plastic parts. This is perhaps due to Britain’s own quality control procedures. Aside from the very basic playset that you know of, it also offers other designs that will complement your children’s adventures.

Adding to the playhouse, climbing frames and slides, Britain created a variety of choices for the playset that they offer to their patrons. One is a sky glider platform that includes climbing rocks placed on the ladder. The ordinary ladder will then look like a mountain climbing wall. Other types of playset from the country have rope ladders that one may use for climbing purposes just like pirates climb ropes when invading a ship.

America’s own designs for a playset

The US will never lag behind when it comes to its own designs for a playset that will suit your garden. You will surely love the basic swing sets but you will also look forward to purchasing a playset that will add to the quality of your children’s playtime.

What makes US proud about its varied designs for a playset is the sturdiness of materials used in the product’s manufacture. Different types of lumber underwent processes that will make the output even more attractive in the eyes of the purchaser. You may also add different accessories to complete the look of a playset plus the designs adapt very well to that available space in your garden.

You do have a lot of choices when it comes to selecting a playset. You may look forward to the different designs as offered in various countries. But of course, it is best to promote and patronize your own country’s products.
